A Holiday Message to All the Single and Divorced Parents

A Holiday Message to All the Single and Divorced Parents

holiday

To all my friends and family who have to consult a custody schedule before making holiday plans … I see you.

Whether you’re newly divorced or you’re a grizzled old vet, the holiday always come with a side of sadness. The trick is to not let it be the main course, right?

Know that you’re not the only one who will need to take a five-minute timeout in the bathroom to shed some tears over the next two days.

Know that you’re not the only one trying to squeeze in all the holiday festivities in half the time. Know that you’re not the only one feeling short-changed. Know that you’re not the only one thinking, “This is not how it’s supposed to be.”

Know that you’re not the only one repeating the mantra “Don’t cry in front of the kids. Don’t cry in front of the kids. Don’t cry in front of the kids …” before saying goodbye to them in a parking lot somewhere.

Know that, yes, all of this sucks, but please don’t let it detract from the joy that is still accessible to you elsewhere. Feel your shitty feelings. Cry a little. Then slap a grin on your face and do your holiday stuff. Show up. Smile even if you don’t feel like it. Eventually, you’ll feel like it again. Promise.

And if you’re having a hard time, remember that it could always be worse. You could still be stuck with your ex … and I don’t know about you, but I’ll take this sadness over that bullshit any day.

Hugs and kisses from me to you, friends. May your eggs be noggy and your plums be sugary. Catch you on the other side.
